Read about Ryan Kalt’s co-op experience and how the skills he learned from the Media Arts and Technology program helped him bring more value to Valpak.
“For one of my co-ops I was employed at Valpak of Staten Island & Greater Brooklyn in Staten Island, New York. Valpak is a marketing and advertising firm that creates custom coupons, menus, and flyers, for local businesses. I was offered the position at Valpak through an employee and family friend who needed someone with a background in asset management and Adobe software. Initially, I was brought in only to create an organized system to make their files easily accessible. At the time, the office only had one graphic designer on staff, which could make deadlines overwhelming. Since I knew Adobe Creative Suite, my boss had asked me to design a coupon for a car wash using InDesign. Valpak really liked the work I did and asked if I wanted to work as a graphic designer for the remainder of the summer. During my co-op I was able to design menus for restaurants and coupons that were mailed to over 200,000 homes in the Staten Island & Greater Brooklyn area. I really enjoyed the work because everyday I would have the opportunity to design ads for a wide variety of clients and no task was ever the same. The office environment made everything a lot easier because of the outgoing and sociable people that I worked with everyday. Of the different co-ops I did, Valpak was definitely my favorite one. It was rewarding for me to see my work actually have a real life use, and I could definitely see myself working there after graduation.”
